First of all lets be clear, Syscom do not condone Software Piracy. The Business Software Alliance are an organsiation sponsored by the software companies to hunt down companies who they have reason to believe are infringing their sponsors licencing laws.

They have no legal status for checking your licences however if they do not get any replies back from you after sending their threatening letters they will almost certainly pass your company name on to the software company they believe who's rights you have infringed. The software company will have product use rights which gives them entitlement to carry out an audit.

Secondly they may pass your company name on to a software licencing sales company who will follow up with a nice big quote for the said software.

Talk to Syscom first, perhaps you will need to "pay the piper" but perhaps all you need is an unbiased professional software audit from a company who knows the day to day issues of running a small/medium company have daily problems far greater than worrying about software licencing.
